Why AI Recommends Some Local Businesses and Not Others

Ask an AI tool who the best contractor in your city is and you will get three or four names. Not a list of forty. Not a map. Just a short, confident shortlist.

Somebody made that list. Nobody paid for a spot on it. So how does a business get on it? The short answer is that AI recommends what it keeps seeing. And it is not looking at your website nearly as much as you would hope.

Key takeaways

  • AI recommends businesses it encounters repeatedly across the web. A SurferSEO study found AI is more likely to strongly recommend a brand when that brand appears on many of the source pages it cites.
  • These mentions are called unstructured citations, meaning any reference to your business on a site you do not own, with or without a link.
  • Semrush research on the most cited domains in AI answers found the same handful of sources feeding results over and over, including community and review platforms.
  • Reddit, Quora, and LinkedIn show up frequently in AI citation studies, which makes them worth a small amount of honest attention.
  • Structured citations still matter. Consistent listings across Google Business Profile, directories, and industry associations are the baseline.
  • A Semrush content study found a positive correlation between visible expertise signals and AI citations, so named people and real credentials help.
  • Being mentioned in ten trusted places usually beats publishing ten more pages on your own website.

Your website is one voice in a much bigger room

Here is the mental shift that helps most.

As we covered in your customers are already asking AI about you, traditional SEO trained everyone to think about their own site. Add pages, add keywords, get links, climb the rankings. That work still matters, but it is no longer the whole game.

When an AI tool builds an answer about local businesses, it pulls from a spread of sources. Review platforms, directories, news articles, association member lists, forum threads, supplier pages, local blogs. Your own website is in there, but it counts as one source among many, and it is the one source the AI knows you control.

Independent mentions carry more weight precisely because you did not write them.

What a brand mention actually is

In local SEO this gets split into two buckets, and both matter.

Structured citations are your business listed in a formal, predictable format. Name, address, phone, hours. Google Business Profile, Yelp, Yellow Pages, the local chamber of commerce, your trade association directory. These are the boring foundation, and they need to match exactly across every platform. Mismatched hours or an old phone number is where wrong AI answers get born.

Unstructured citations are everything else. A local news story that quotes you. A Reddit thread where somebody says your shop did a good job. A supplier page listing you as a certified installer. A guest article you wrote for an industry site. A podcast appearance.

These do not follow any format and often do not include a link. They still count.

SurferSEO looked at how brand mentions influence AI recommendations and found that the more cited source pages a brand appeared on, the more strongly AI tools recommended it. Volume and spread, not perfection on any single page.

Where to actually get mentioned

Nobody running a small business has time to be everywhere. So pick a short list and do it properly.

Places worth the effort for most local businesses:

  • Your Google Business Profile, kept current with real posts and photos, not set up once in 2019
  • Two or three major directories that genuinely apply to your trade, plus your local chamber
  • Your trade association or certification body member listing
  • Suppliers and manufacturers you work with, many of whom maintain “find an installer” pages
  • Local news and community publications, especially when you have something real to say
  • Sponsorship pages for the teams and events you already support
  • LinkedIn, where your own expertise can live under your name

That last group is worth pausing on. Semrush found a positive correlation between visible expertise signals and AI citations, which in plain terms means content attached to a real named person with real credentials tends to get picked up more than anonymous marketing copy.

A word on forums

Reddit and Quora appear constantly in AI citation research, which tempts people into doing something stupid.

Do not go post about your own business. Reddit in particular is very good at spotting it, and getting called out in a thread is a worse outcome than not being in the thread at all.

What does work is being genuinely useful in conversations you actually know something about. Answer the question. Mention your business only if it is relevant to answering it. Over time your name gets associated with the topic, which is the whole point.

The honest bottom line

This is slower work than buying ads and there is no dashboard that shows it working right away. But it compounds, and it is the single clearest signal you can send that your business is real, active, and worth recommending.
